The Department

The objective of the Department of Fine Arts and Art Sciences is to cultivate and promote fine arts through academic and applied teaching; to provide students with the necessary theoretical background and artistic skills that advance their aesthetic education and ensure a successful artistic and professional career; to train students in art history and theory of art; to contribute to the social, cultural and economic development of the region.

The Department was founded in 2000 and was active till June 2017 as the Department of Plastic Arts and Sciences of Art. Since 2013 it is part of the School of Fine Arts of the University of Ioannina. The Law 4386/2016 (Government Gazette no. Sheet 83, vol. I, May 11, 2016, Article 63), changed the name of the Department to that of Fine Arts and Art Sciences, also increasing the number of semesters of study from eight (8) to ten (10). Moreover, it modified regulations concerning entrance examinations in line with the procedure applicable to the other Fine Arts Departments of Faculties of Fine Arts in Greece.

Facilities include fully developed and functional laboratories (painting, sculpture, engraving, expanded forms of artistic expression, video-audiovisual arts, digital art forms, photography, animation, computer science, history of art) and fully equipped classrooms for the teaching of theoretical courses adapted to the Department’s needs.

The Department of Fine Arts and Art Sciences also awards degrees from an undergraduate up to a doctoral level. Four fields of specialization comprise a single degree as clearly defined academic and professional subject areas: a. Painting, b. Sculpture, c. Multimedia - Graphic Arts, d. History and Theory of Art.

The graduates of the Fine Arts and Art Sciences Department, having acquired expertise in the field of the visual arts and of art history and theory, can be employed in the public or private sector at universities, research and cultural institutions, museums, galleries that specialize on one or more subjects taught at the Department. They can also teach courses on art, such as aesthetic education and the history of art in primary or secondary education, or work as freelancers. The graduates who wish to pursue art teaching in education, regardless of their chosen subject area, are required to attend and successfully pass the educational courses as outlined in the syllabus and the Department’s regulations.
